Book PC History

TheBookPC.com came online in the Spring of 2001 specializing in Book PC Systems, hence our company name, The Book PC. The Book PC, a pioneer in small computer systems, identified the need and rising demand for Mini PC systems and created an online web store for customers to view, customize and purchase book-sized computers. At the time there were only a few small form factor computer manufacturers. In fact, initially our entire product offering consisted of 4 products from 2 manufacturers. As our customer base grew so did the manufacturers producing small computer systems. This in turn expanded our product line. TheBookPC.com first offered tour small computers in three different categories based on their form factor; Mini PC systems, Book PC systems and Cube PC systems. With these three Mini Computer categories customers could now easily view by form factor the PC they were interested in.

Throughout the years we asked our customers exactly what they were using the small computers they purchased from us for. We were amazed by what the small PCs were used for as well as where they were used. Customers were using these smaller computers they purchased from us to hook up to their TV and watch DVD’s and have the ability to surf the web, college students used them for their dorm room where space was a factor, boaters were putting them on their yachts in staterooms, IT admin’s were stacking them and using them as server farms, and business owners and offices mangers were replacing those bulky towers with a slim book PC systems. The list of small computer uses went on and on and we were amazed. As the small form factor market became more popular the variety of models available grew.

The original 3 categories which consisted of Mini PC systems, Book PC systems and Cube PC systems still remain today however due to the increase of manufacturers and products they now have company, including, LCD PC systems, Media Center PC’s, short rackmount systems, mini laptops, mini LCD’s and mini keyboards/mouse. In an effort to demonstrate the versatility of small computers to potential customers The Book PC decided to add even more categories. In addition to sorting by size or form factor a list of real world categories was created; home computer, office computer, college computer, media center pc, gaming pc, marine / auto pc, digital signage pc, point of sale (POS) computer and dental / medical pc. The Book PC’s complete product line of small computers is spread out over all of the above categories to give the customers the option to search by form factor or category.

The Book PC product line consists of over 55 products from 8 different manufactures that are all assembled in-house at our office in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. AOpen, Shuttle, MSI, Fit PC (CompuLab) and nMediaPC round out our top mini computer manufacturers. Each small computer manufacturer that we sell offers a special niche within the small form factor market.

AOpen manufacturers a Mini PC that is on average 6.5” x 6.5” x 2” inches. Their 2 product lines consist of XC Mini, a retail packed version designed for an end user, and the Digital Engine, and OEM solution designed for industrial applications with an emphasis on digital signage PC . Both lines use notebook processors, memory, hard drives and optical drives which is how AOpen is able to achieve the small size. The Book PC has been providing AOpen’s products since 2006.

Shuttle PC is a manufacturer that specializes on what we categorize as a “cube PC”. These small computer systems are about 8” x 8” x 13” inches. They are a little larger than a Mini PC however they support multiple drives as well as have PCI and PCI-Express slots. They also feature standard desktop components which makes them a little more beefier. Because of the available PCI slots they are great solutions for point-of-sale (POS), dental and medical office’s as they accept special hardware peripherals to be hooked up such as bar code scanners and digital x-ray equipment.

MSI is a manufacturer that is mainly known for their motherboard’s. They produce Mini PC and Book PC systems as well as mini notebook’s - all featuring their award winning motherboards. MSI’s Mini PC, or industrial PC’s are about 6” x 6” x 2” while their book PC’s are larger at 13” x 15” x 4”. Other than the size the main difference is the industrial PC’s use all notebook components to achieve its size while the book pc’s use standard desktop components. All of the mini notebooks feature the Intel Atom CPU which is a low power CPU enabling them to run cool and have a long battery life.

CompuLab manufacturers the Fit-PC line. The fit-PC is an embedded solution currently on its second generation, the fit-PC2. This Mini PC is the smallest, most power-efficient Intel Atom PC to date. It is designed around the Intel Atom Z530 1.6GHz processor and the ultra low power Intel US15W system controller hub. This allows fit-PC2 to run Windows XP or Ubuntu Linux at just 6W and to play full HD 1080p H.264 video using less than 7W.

nMediaPC specializes in Home theater PC (HTPC). All nMediaPC systems come fully equipped with everything you’ll need to play music, DVDs and record television programs, all in one compact unit.  Designed to get the maximum potential out of your home theatre equipment the powerful nMediaPC system (HTPC) is an increasingly popular addition to cutting edge Home Theater packages.
